HONESTY BOX (scroll down for CDs)

Hi there, everyone.  I don't want to be that guy doing this.  I stopped busking as soon as I began to charge for gigs way back in 2000.  If I'm honest it hurts my pride as a musician to be even putting this here, but here goes!  As you know, the way the record industry works now is that Spotify and YouTube give you all the music in the world for a small monthly subscription and musicians that created the music and played it get a few copper pennies at best ... at least when I was busking some generous souls who could afford it occasionally threw a nugget (pound coin) in the hat.  The only money we get from recordings are those albums we sell on our own websites or on tour.  We also make money from playing live through ticket sales and bums on seats.

And so we come to the inevitable.  CoronaVirus.  Covid19.  All of the gigs have been cancelled.  Of course they're cancelled, it would be reckless to even carry on holding gigs at the moment.  So far the UK government has made no provision for the self-employed at all so we face absolutely no income for the forseeable future.  It's not just us, almost all businesses are screwed in some way and people in the gig-economy especailly so.

So please consider buying something from my little shop.  I am going to be working on extra content while in "self-isolation" so watch this space - and online streaming gigs are on the horizon.  In the meantime the donate button above is there if you have enjoyed my music over the years, especially if you stream my music through services like Spotify or YouTube ... but please ONLY DO SO IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT ... you can give me as much or as little as you like (well maybe not 1p as I think PayPal would charge me more than 1p to process it!) but you know what I mean.  It's like those people who leave eggs out by the side of the road with a tub to put the money in, but on the internet and for streaming music.  Thank you very much for reading.

Needle Pin, Needle Pin

Jackie Oates and John Spiers

This album features four songs recorded by John and Jackie on a Thursday afternoon in January 2020, at Richard Evans' house in Bath. These songs evolved through spontaneous performances at Nettlebed Folk Club over a number of years.

The second half of the album features the stand alone songs from Jackie's Radio Ballad; 'The Lacemakers - The Lost Art of Telling'. The songs explore the rhymes and 'tells' that were once sung by bobbin lace makers who learned their trade at lace schools around the Southern Midlands.
